What happened to you could be a variation on something I've seen often as a book editor and critic: Lesser-known authors sometimes list in their acknowledgements the names of better-established authors with whom they've had *very* slight contact. They may do this to try to curry favor with the bigger names or suggest to readers that they're better friends than they are with those bigger names. Or they may be so inexperienced they don't realize you don't have to thank every editor who brushes a speck of lint off your work.

Hope you can sort it out without too much difficulty! It does sound confusing.
