Joyce is a really interesting case in this context, because Reynolds Price didn't include in his definition something others might have: A genius has to have given the world something new, the test applied to so many scientists labeled "geniuses." (Would we think Einstein as genius if not for the Special Theory of Relativity?) If you use the novelty factor a yardstick, Joyce probably would qualify.

I wondered about movies, too, because filmmaking is a collaborative art, and often it's hard to tease apart the contributions of the people involved, or to say whose "genius" played the greatest role in great movies: the director, an actor, a cinematographer, etc. Thank you for raising such pertinent issues!
