I've read a lot about the shortages of therapists of color or specific cultural backgrounds, and a response I can imagine some readers making to this post is: Well, I'd love to try therapy, but I can't find a therapist who might understand my challenges as, say, an Indian-American woman from a Hindu family.
It's a sticky wicket, but if you have thoughts, you might consider doing a piece on: Does the therapist's cultural background matter? What if there's no one with the background you'd like near you? What are some resources?
An example: I live in a small Alabama town that's about 90% white, 10% black, and I've never met a therapist of color here. But we have black churches, and every church, regardless of the cultural background of members, should have on staff someone trained in pastoral counseling. So maybe starting there would be an option?
