It's true: There are high-quality self-published books.

One catch is: Where I see them most often is in independent bookstores, which--here in the South--are great about displaying them up front, giving the authors signings, etc. But there's a lot of regional pride in the South, and self-published authors may have a tougher time elsewhere.
