It's another sign of who Springsteen is as a person that his papers ended up at an almost unknown public university near his hometown.

Not sure if he gave or sold his papers to Monmouth, but I'd guess he donated them and took only the tax deduction (which you can get in the U.S. if you do) instead of taking the millions he could no doubt have made if he'd sold them to a rich private university as other writers have done.
