It's absolutely true that the traditional media today don't get the thanks they deserve if they are still managing to operate amid the journalistic apocalypse. Your story about Slave Lake was, it seems, a forerunner of the kind of thing we see all the time now.

Thank you for the reminder that, yes, often people do want hand-holding or social connections more than hard facts.
