It does depend to some extent on the book. And Sanderson's fans are so passionate, I can see why they'd want a letter-perfect adaptation and see any changes as spoiling it.

You make a good point about older books assigned in schools. Some of them involve stereotypes that have gone badly out of date and you'd have to change if you filmed them today.
