Interesting. This isn't necessarily true in the U.S. In fact, some journalists avoid restaurant meetings with potential sources, including PR people, because--especially at large newspapers--reporters aren't allowed to accept free meals (i.e., the source may not pay for the meal--the journalist must). And an awkward situation can result if the PR tries to grab the check or even pay in advance.
