Most films did not mention that a drug’s effects are determined by two principal factors — set and setting. As you probably know, set means your mental or physical condition at the time — are you tired, young, overweight, lonely, or just trying to be one of the boys, one of the girls? Set also includes why you are taking a drug — just to try it, for fun, to get out of a funk, for a medical condition, to be cool. Or if you are hooked. Setting means location, where you are physically when you try or take a drug — in your friend’s basement, the back alley, on a mountaintop, at a rock concert, in a hospital room.

Interesting. I've reviewed a lot books about drug abuse, particularly since the beginning of the opioid crises, and haven't heard those two factors spelled out quite so directly in any of them.
