In a way, you and I seem to be describing the same syndrome: Sayers' tendency to slow down her books by putting in a lot of details, whether about theology or bell-ringing, that don't advance the plot.

That might appeal to some people who enjoy learning about the subjects she brings in. But if you want an intelligent but quick and diverting plot, it can get in the way.
