In a novel or short story: It often helps to show the protagonist in motion, using an action verb, in the first line or two. In fiction the best opening depends on what you're trying to do. But a famous novelist and writing teacher once said she especially dislikes an opening scene that shows a character standing by a window thinking deep thoughts (in her view, a cliched opening).
