I'd tread lightly here. More than 2000 newspapers have died in the past two decades, hundreds just since the start of the pandemic. So many lack budget or staff for the kind of research you envision, which they would have had a couple of decades ago.

You can blame local media for a lot of things, but without more evidence, I'm not persuaded that this is one of them.
