I revere the novel All Quiet on the Western Front: a masterpiece of tone. Novels like that one — which depend so heavily on tone — seem to me to be especially risky to translate to the screen because fidelity to the plot is never enough, as it can be with well-done potboilers.

I haven’t seen the movie of Jude, but your haunting description makes me want to watch it. Thanks!
