I probably could have made this clearer, but a widely shared view today seems to be: You can't have one "Great American Novel" because the country has become so much more diverse than it was in 1868. You have to think in terms of many great American novels that would reflect everybody.

I may write more about what that would look like in the future. Thanks for the nudge.
