I haven't read Mother Night, but this is a fine metaphor.

Vonnegut’s “cuckoo clock in Hell” keeps perfect time, then jumps ahead for a while, then works perfectly, and then jumps ahead again. The missing teeth have been purposely filed off and explain how the real and fictional people in his book are able to hold contradictory views and to alternate between admirable and despicable behaviors.
