I agree with a lot of this story, but I'd be be careful on this point. Some publications have such a small following, it may be smaller than yours--seriously--even if you've been here for a very short time. Or a pub might *appear* to be right for you but may have hidden rules you don't yet know or may have largely unengaged hit-and-run writers (who post stories but don't highlight, comment on, or clap for others').
In my experience in can take months to figure out which publications are the best fit for what you want to publish. That's another way of saying that--even in my first month or two on Medium--I did better by self-publishing some articles than big pubs. The Riff is great, though, and editors @KevinAlexander and @NoahFenster are a pleasure to work with.
