He was great at deadpan in Casablanca and elsewhere. I'm sure some American women can do it well, too, but the best actress I know of at it is another Brit, Emma Thompson. One my favorite lines from the film of Sense and Sensibility is her comment to her sister: Not everyone shares your passion for dead leaves.
