Good point. All the literary scorekeeping is of a piece with those summer reading challenges that libraries have for students, which let you earn prizes for reading a certain number of books.

But the competitive reading is out of control among adults. It involves so much implicit self-congratulation among high-volume readers. It's really off-putting.
