Exactly. And that's what the publishers do for the biggest-name authors. James Patterson's publisher apparently has an entire staff devoted just to him.

But non-celebrity authors are expected to do it themselves, and it can be exhausting. It can turn into a case of the tail wagging the dog: All the publicity seriously distracts them from from their writing, often with little or no benefit. Writers have to draw the line somewhere.
