"Could communicate emotion and intellect in the same sentence": yes! She also did it with remarkable consistency over a long career. All of us like some of her books better than others. But if you look at one of the early ones--like "The White Album"--next to later ones like "The Year of Magical Thinking" there wasn't that falling-off of quality that you see in so many writers in their later years.
