No, a bond salesman or broker. In the U.S., a “bondsman” is typically a bail bondsman, somebody who bails you out of jail. FSF says Nick was sent east to learn the bond business: i.e. to learn to sell bonds or possibly analyze them. He could have learned to be a bail bondsman almost anywhere in the U.S. and wouldn’t need to be in New York.
