As I see it, the bot-generated follows and undisclosed AT-generated content pose different issues. The bot followers are easy to spot: nonsensical names, "hasn't written any stories yet," etc. And Medium purges them every so often. You'll see a group drop in your followers when it happens.

The ChatGPT-generated content is different. It comes from real people trying to game the system. They're using AI to generate stories and often tweaking them to make them look real (e.g., by adding a chatty, first-person intro). This violates the Medium policy that requires you to disclose AI use. And it causes real harm to members. We all share the same pot of membership fees, so the cheaters are stealing your money.

I wrote about this and how I'm fighting in a recent post called something like "Don't Let Chat GPT Ruin Medium Book Reviews." A key point: It's important to report these to Medium (using the Report button or writing to Trust@Medium.com) to keep the cheaters from stealing others' earnings.
