An good question. I think about issues like this a lot.

Salinger might have a better chance than some because he'd been publishing in the New Yorker, and therefore might be seen as having a "platform." A larger question is: What about a writer who had Salinger's abilities but hadn't managed to crack the New Yorker or another high-profile magazine? That person might have a much tougher time.
