Amended response: Maybe I should have said "occupied by British soldiers." My understanding of how that drama went down was:

New Brunswick is just up the road from Princeton. And even before that battle, New Brunswick was heavily fortified with British soldiers (in addition to ordinary citizens) in the expectation that Washington's Continental Army in Pennsylvania (e.g., Valley Forge) would come through en route to the bigger prize of New York City.
