All writers probably do it at times. Trends only get acronyms if they're extremely common (and, as I mentioned in the piece, this one turns up not just in novels and short stories but movie scripts).

We're lucky that frustrated editors came up with a clean one instead of one of the profane ones I've heard from editors in newsrooms I've worked in :).
