Agree with all of this. I knew little enough about Cook to have few expectations beyond that it's open season on bashing explorers as bearers of diseases and worse, so I expected him to take some lumps.

He does take lumps. But Sides gives a balanced and nuanced portrait, which is hard to do these days.
