Agree: The midlist has all but disappeared, and writers who might once have made it are turning to self-publishing.

What's frustrating is that the writers who are still getting published are expected to shoulder more and more of the burden--not just promoting their own books but others' too. Thanks for mentioning the vanishing midlist, which is a factor here.
