Agree that this comment isn't quite clear. Writing off your usual subject can be a good way to develop a secondary area of expertise in addition to your main one: i.e., to grow as a writer.

If Medium makes it harder for you find readers if you go off message, it's making it harder for you to grow (which seems contrary to one of the goals it's expressed elsewhere).
