Agree! Joan Didion has spoken a lot about how she learned to write at Vogue. And tomorrow in my Pop Culture Shorts column on FanFare, I'm reviewing Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory," first published in Mademoiselle, which to my mind is just a notch below Dylan Thomas' "A Child's Christmas in Wales" among 20th c. holiday short stories. Your point about the inability to take women's magazine serious is very well taken.
