After I wrote this, I read that the weird slang and all the a'ints were popular among the English upper classes at a certain point and the language actually migrated from them on down to the lower ones, counterintuitive as it sounds.

That was the first I've heard of it, and I'm not sure if it's true. But if it is, it could explain what Sayers was trying to do.
